Commitment to Communities of Color

Tony is proud of the diversity in the 2nd Congressional District. In Congress, he'll stand up for historically disadvantaged communities.

The east side of Omaha has been systematically disadvantaged in earning funding and investments. Historic redlining put both North and South Omaha and their primarily communities of color at an economic disadvantage. The unique issues facing our Black and Latino communities must be addressed by listening to community oriented solutions.

In the Legislature, I have worked with my colleagues in North Omaha to secure hundreds of millions of dollars in historic investment from state funds to rebuild and revitalize communities. We worked on transformative projects like the Plaza De La Raza effort in South Omaha, and investing in housing and business development in North Omaha.

I have worked on housing projects to increase the amount of owner occupied housing for middle and working class individuals. The best way to build generational wealth is for families to own their own home, something that has had barriers in place for communities of color in the past. I was proud to pass my Middle Income Workforce Housing Investment Act to put $10 million towards building or repairing housing in Douglas County.

And I know that Black Women specifically have struggled to have their healthcare taken seriously. In the Legislature, I prioritized maternal healthcare protections, and expanded postpartum Medicaid coverage from 2 months to 12 months to ensure women are being cared for to have better outcomes.
