Omaha World Herald: Side-by-side, you decide: Tony Vargas gives his reasons you should vote for him for US House
My parents immigrated to this country in search of the American Dream. Coming from Peru, they knew anything was possible in America. They got to work, taking on two or more jobs while raising my two brothers and me in a one-bedroom apartment. I remember my mother making breakfast before going to her job while my dad was just getting back from working a third shift. In a country full of opportunities, my parents sacrificed their entire lives to give me and my brothers an opportunity for a better life.
It was a union job that gave our family a path out of poverty and lifted us into the middle class. My parents bought a house and I worked my way through college on a Pell Grant. I understand the challenges families are facing today because I’ve faced them too. I’ve seen how a good-paying job and a good education can change everything.
That’s why I’ve spent my life trying to give back, and that’s why I’m running for Congress. As a former teacher, former Omaha Public Schools Board member, and a Nebraska state senator, I always strove to put people first and help families get ahead. And as a dad to my beautiful children Ava and Luca, I know nothing is more important than keeping our kids safe and giving them every opportunity to succeed.
In the last eight years in the state Legislature, I’ve worked across the aisle to pass two of the largest tax cuts in state history, boost law enforcement funding by more than $37 million a year, strengthen public education, and expand access to health care. And by working together, we passed a balanced budget every single year.
In Nebraska, we pride ourselves on working together, helping out our neighbors, and finding common ground to solve the issues affecting our community. That’s exactly how I spent my time in the Legislature.
But Washington is failing us. There’s too much partisan bickering, chaos, and politicians too concerned with power. And no one is guiltier of this than Don Bacon.
Don Bacon’s top priority is protecting his seat in Washington — that’s why he has consistently fallen in line with his MAGA party bosses at the expense of Nebraska working families. It’s why he raised taxes on middle class families so he could give a tax break to his special interest donors. It’s also why he said “yes” to gutting health care for thousands of Nebraskans with preexisting conditions. It’s why he voted against lowering prescription drug costs and capping the cost of insulin.
When Congress had the opportunity to pass a bipartisan border security bill, Donald Trump ordered MAGA Republicans to kill the bill so he could use the issue to campaign on — and Don Bacon obeyed. That bill would have invested in more border patrol agents and expedited our backlogged court system. I would have voted for that bill. We need leaders who will put partisanship aside to address this crisis.
And Don Bacon remains one of the most extreme politicians trying to insert themselves into women’s reproductive healthcare decisions. He has co-sponsored a nationwide abortion ban not once, not twice, but three times with no exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the mother. His bill could even end IVF nationwide and ban forms of birth control. Women will die because Don Bacon thinks he knows better than women and their doctors. I don’t want politicians ever controlling what my daughter can or can’t do with her body.
The America my parents dreamed of meant freedom and a fair shot for everyone. We can get back to that. But we must have leaders who stand up for working families — not cave to MAGA extremists.
I will fight for working families every day in Washington, just like I have here in Nebraska. And I will never forget the Nebraska values of working with your colleagues, even when you disagree, to find the path forward that helps families just like mine.
Restoring
the American Dream and moving on from the extremism in Washington will
take new mindsets and new leaders. If you’re ready for change, I am
humbly asking for your support on November 5th. Together, we can change
the chapter in Washington, and restore the American Dream so many of us
are fighting to provide our families.
